Custom Material Handling Equipment For Specialty Applications
You can’t always find off-the-shelf equipment to solve challenging material handling problems, and an entirely custom engineered solution is often prohibitively expensive. Eliminate the frustration of trying to use equipment that was not designed or intended for your application. Let us analyze your process then develop a cost-effective solution to handle your products safely and efficiently.
We help industrial and manufacturing clients solve challenging material handling problems every day by providing specialty & customized material handling equipment. Below you’ll find case studies of a few of our recent projects.

Custom Drum Handling Application
A food processor needed a drum handler to meter ingredients into a large mixer. The problem was that there were six different sizes & types of drums; steel paper & plastic, in 55-gallon and 35-gallon sizes. And where the drum handler comes into contact with food the structural part of the clamp had to be corrosion proof with electric operation to eliminate any possibility of ingredient contamination.
Armanni designed a clamp with three gripping areas, which would not interfere with the ribs on steel drums. The gripper pads are rubber faced to ensure proper contact regardless of the drum material, and while the clamp components are made from stainless steel, the clamp actuator and the rest of the truck are standard steel construction, thus saving a lot of money over a 100% stainless steel truck. The forward rotation of the drum is powered by a powerful electric gear motor, so no contamination from potential hydraulic leaks.
Custom Tire Handling Application
A supplier to construction equipment manufacturers including John Deere and Caterpillar needed a way to lift and transport large, heavy tires to different parts of the plant without touching the bead where the tire seals against the rim, or the rim itself. The lifter had to accommodate numerous tire sizes and maneuver in congested areas.
Armanni’s large tire mover lifts the tire by the treads and can handle a broad range of tire diameters and weights. Also, the tire can be rotated to align lug studs with the wheel, and the machine can drive sideways, or “crab-walk” left or right to make positioning faster and easier.
Custom Shaft Handling Application
Companies that print and convert paper and board from raw materials to finished goods unwind and rewind rolls of material on pneumatically or mechanically expanding shafts. When these shaft have to support rolls weighing up to 6,000 lbs, and unwind or rewind at speeds up to 2,000 feet / minute, these expanding shafts get very heavy and impossible to handle by hand.
Armanni & partner Schlumpf USA teamed up to design a heavy duty shaft handling machine based on the Delta truck platform. The shaft is gripped on one end by a powerful hydraulic clamp and inserted into a new roll or extracted from a finished roll, quickly and easily, without any risk to the operator. The machine is equipped with hydraulic lever valves for precise positioning of the shaft with the clamp, a hydraulic side shift, laser positioning system and video camera and display to help the operator find the optimum clamping position.
Automotive Transmission Handling Application
An automotive transmission manufacturer and supplier to Jeep, Land Rover, Honda and other well-known brands needed help handling metal pallets loaded with finished transmissions. Their existing walk behind stacker trucks couldn’t handle the heavy loads and size of the pallet without the forks and mast deflecting and allowing the pallet to slide on the forks. When the operator loaded a pallet and came to a quick stop, the pallet would slide off the forks and drop transmissions on the floor! Not only was this a safety hazard, the cost to repair units damaged in the fall was growing out of control!
Armanni USA solved this problem using longer forks and a backward tilting function to keep the pallet on the forks until ready to discharge. The powerful Delta truck with industrial traction batteries keeps the operation going smoothly with less downtime for charging and the complete elimination of damage to finished goods.
Custom Roll Handling Scissor Cart
A Midwest manufacturer of specialty papers needed a way to move heavy rolls from their slitting machine rewind to another part of the plant. Not so easy with a 5,000 lb roll! As the slitter rewind ejects the roll at a height of about 30” (750 mm).
Armanni and partner Schlumpf USA teamed up to design a mobile scissor lift cart with a “V” cradle top to handle the roll. Special ramps deploy to meet the unloading point of the rewind, and the roll is transferred to the cart. Stops on the other side of the cart to prevent the roll from overshooting, and the variable height of the scissor mechanism makes loading and unloading effortless.
OD Roll Handling Stacker
Many paper & plastic film manufacturers have ride-on type forklifts with outside “O.D.” clamps for lifting, turning and stacking rolls. Smaller converters may not have the budget or the room for a ride-on truck. Also, some materials will “telescope” when lifted by other means, such as from the core. OD clamps prevent a roll from telescoping by applying high pressure to the outer layers of material.
Armanni and clamp manufacturer Cascade Corp. collaborated to bring a converting sized clamp to the market that could mount on less expensive and more compact walk-behind stacker trucks. The Cascade clamp offers high clamping pressures and various pad types to work with numerous rolled material types. The clamp can lift rolls from the floor sitting on their diameter, then turn them 360º, making a difficult task safe and easy.
Custom Scissor Lift For Bottled Gas
A Southern manufacturer of plastic films and nonwoven materials needed a way to move LP gas tanks from an outside storage cage, up a flight of stairs, across the stoop, through a door and into the warehouse where an empty tank would be exchanged for a full tank on a lift truck. However, carrying the containers of LP gas up the stairs presented serious safety concerns.
Armanni USA developed a scissor lift table with complete safety railings that an operator could place the tank on and ride up to the level of the top stairs. Spring loaded gates and a corrosion free top make outdoor use simple and easy. A hand-held pendant controls the up and down movement of the table. The lifter eliminates the risk of operator injury and reduces operator fatigue and danger of dropping a pressurized tank!
Custom Stacker For Motor Service On Oil Rig
A large petroleum producer needed a safe and easy way to change out special electric motors installed on gas compressors on offshore drilling rigs staged off the coast of Nigeria. The problems? The motors weight up to 1,000 lbs and the handling equipment had to be completely mechanical – no electric systems that could spark and cause a fire are allowed. In addition, the deck of the drilling rig is grated metal – not easy to roll over.
Armanni and Schlumpf teamed up to produce a mobile work platform that allows the maintenance crew to stage under the motor, support it on its fan housing, uninstall the motor and safely lower it to the deck. The lifter will also lift a new motor to the installation point and enable the staff to position and attach the motor to the compressor. A giant turntable “lazy Susan” enables precise rotation of the motor for alignment with mating parts, and a detachable scaffold allows the operator to work underneath the motor for installation and removal. Large rubber coated wheels roll smoothly over the deck grating. The lifts are a valuable labor savor, enabling staff to make onsite repairs without flying in special teams.
Custom Roll & Shaft Handling Stacker
The new US operation of a Chinese auto glass manufacturer needed a way to take rolls of window glass safety film from a pallet, rotate them onto their diameter, and carry the rolls to an unwinding machine supported by an expanding shaft. Typically these steps would warrant using two different handling devices – one for turning and one for transporting in the core horizontal position.
Partner Schlumpf USA designed multi-function tooling with a hydraulic roll lifter-turner to lift and turn the rolls by the core. A set of fold-down outriggers are then deployed to lift the roll by the shaft, thus eliminating the need for two separate machines. An extra-wide fork carriage supplied by Cascade enables the machine to handle multiple roll widths, and a Cascade hydraulic side shift allow precise positioning of the roll with the unwind. The machines make a difficult handling operation safe and easy using minimal resources.
